and newspapers can now be easily moved to the web .
It has long been possible to distribute over the net
through downloadable PDF files. But new
flash and java readers today provide a much more
interactive opportunity to read online.
Two of the biggest sites are Calaméo and
Issuu where you can publish your files
as interactive paper magazines that you
read on the screen. You can even get
paper sounds when you turn the pages.
Websites and apps make the web more accessible
but all materials still need to be designed
in the same way as printed matter. There is still
a great need for graphic design. Reading on
digital screens requires a different design
than in a newspaper. But the material is basically
the same.
The digital world is designed. Everything from game content to web pages is basically graphic design.
Putting images and text together as clearly as possible and legibly sets completely different requirements in the digital world than in the printed reality. Screens make other demands on the length of texts and the typographical freedom.
At the same time, new ways of distributing what could be printed media will appear. Books and magazines can be sent at a minimal cost. we also have a virtual printing press in my country area that prints books that can be read inside the virtual world Second life.
Doing graphic design in the virtual and real world is really a challenge. Digital design only increases so we don't do print anymore.

Photo for web or
virtual worlds.
Photography is the basis for many of the textures we use in games and virtual worlds. Photos and illustrations are also a good way to convey information on websites when you don't want to post too long texts. Photography is widely used everywhere in the media. You cannot do without a large image archive and photographers.
There are more ways to create images today. 3D programs make it possible to create images that would be impossible in reality or too expensive to produce and sometimes digital images make it possible to finish the result exactly as you want it.
In Second life we produce lots of images for advertisements and magazines. The second life world makes it possible to create virtual images that can often compete with the best of real life photos. we naturally have a photo studio "in world" also for product photos of our virtual products.
We still have our analogue lab but it is not used much in the digital imaging world. Digital cameras mean that the photo world has moved into the computer. The image in the field is an HDR (high definition range) image that you take with a regular digital camera and then extract the information better through post-processing in a computer.
Photographing has not changed but the use and distribution of images on The Internet is different.
The picture on the left is a fashion picture taken in the virtual world Second life. Actually completely created in software in a computer but the process is surprisingly similar to those you go through to create a regular fashion image.
Choice of model, clothes, makeup, location, lighting and camera. Photo production is the same even if it is virtual.
Production of completely computer-generated images provides completely different possibilities for describing an alternative reality, even if it can be an ordinary product photo. A lot of what is done is abstract images that are based on software and algorithms. Like all the fractal images that flooded the web for a while.
We have a small render farm for ray tracing of more advanced images. An advanced image can take 24 hours to make on a good computer so extra capacity is always longed for.
The actual process of creating the image is very time consuming because everything, every little detail has to be created. Therefore, today we often use game engines and virtual worlds to create exciting images. With someone after treatment, you can get fantastic results at a much lower cost.

Within Open source there are several very good systems for publishing material. we use Joomla which is a CMS system that is well suited when several people are to publish material and it is easy to connect a webshop from Virtuemart to the pages. Wordpress is a blog system for a few users that can be expanded with lots of gadgets.
Using this type of system makes it easy to post new material, create web advertising, questions and more and it works without you need extensive knowledge of the web or computers. Once the system is in place, it largely takes care of itself. What you lose compared to a normal website written in ASP or HTML is that you have somewhat less opportunity to influence function and appearance. But if you have the courage to familiarize yourself with the possibilities, you can configure your site very much yourself.
When it comes to appearance, these are changed through themes that are available for free or can be purchased online.
Interactive media can be the Internet or games and software. Websites, Twitter and Facebook to communicate or Youtube for video and Machinima. Music from lots of places and everything needs well-designed websites to function.
We ourselves have various sites that act as information and sales sites on the net. Just like in regular media, there must be a clear idea with a website and
use for the users. The technique should not be visible. We have sites that work with databases as a basis but also some completely normal HTML sites, which is sometimes enough for a website to provide the information needed.
Simpler ASP programming or PHP can make a big difference to a site's function and does not need to cost much to develop. There are also ready-made CMS and blog systems that you can use for free if you need an online presence.
Publishing systems and blogs use themes
to change appearance. we make themes for
Wordpress, Joomla, DotNetNuke, Blogger.
A theme is a set of graphics and CSS
files that describe how the website should look.
Themes are graphic design and a little technology in one
package. There are many themes for download
to the big systems like Wordpress, but you
often have to share the appearance with other websites.
If you want to have your own graphic profile, you need
a specially made theme.
You would like to have your own logo and
perhaps a specially made background. Some of the
publishing systems can be changed in the
administration of the website, but in
most cases you need your own theme that
can be color and logo coordinated to your
own company.

We build houses and landscapes.

In Second life we make everything from
fashion to drivable trucks.
We develop games, which can mean a lot today. Everything from simple script games on a web page to MMO clients with tens of thousands of players. All games need content. Enemies, monsters, gadgets and environments. Everything has to be built and constructed from the smallest blade of grass on the ground.
We work with several different development systems. The 3D material is connected with Collada and we use several Open source systems such as Blender and Gimp, above all because they can be run under Linux. The latest system is Unity, a
complete game building system.
To create sounds we mainly use midi synths which we mix down with all imaginable sounds in Samplitude.
For textures we have an image archive with thousands of images and there are tons of free images online.
Most things can be done without leaving the keyboard, which makes development cheaper and faster.
A game object can consist of anything. It is usually a figure, vehicle or weapon. An object must first be created in a 3D program where the shape and textures are put in place. Bone structures for animation, the animations themselves, sound for the object and finally the script that talks about what it should do.
Game objects have in common that they must be scripted. A small program that is connected to the object and tells what it should do. One of the most common script languages is Lua, which is used, among other things, in World of warcraft.
An object can be very complicated.
We make objects for both virtual worlds and games. As a content supplier, we create both for online sales and make order jobs.
Standing high on a mountain and looking down into a valley while the sun slowly sets is something you often do in many games. Someone created the sky which can be dynamic or created as an image and pasted into the world.
The valley and mountains are often created in a 3D map program or a fractal program. The trees, bushes and roads are created to support the story and create a background mood for the player's actions.
Creating an entire world can be extremely time consuming. The big time stealer is putting all the textures in the right place. Trees and bushes can be set automatically. Yes, in fact, we have developed software that builds entire cities. we create cities, alien planets and deep forests. We have made some landscapes as open source for Opensim. Available for download online.

Over the years we have developed
a number of programs.
We have done everything from analysis
and database programs to a
program that created an entire
city.

We have a set of development servers that make it possible to test server and game software. Being able to develop programs and websites "in house" provides opportunities to test and experiment without the Internet servers going down all the time. we run both Apache and IIS 7 for web development and MySql for the databases.
We also use them as a "render farm" for 3D graphics. The entire development stack sits on its own network separated from the rest of the network. A big task is also to run Opensim's development system. We have six islands that are run "in house" and can be accessed from the Internet via a VPN line.
The developers we work with are all over the world. This makes it possible to develop both graphics and above all scripting for Second life without ruining the experience in SL. Sometimes things go wrong. we have islands that are developed here and can now be downloaded online. Entire environments that are ready to load into an Opensim server.
Opensim is an open source software that makes it possible to run a virtual world yourself privately or for the company. Opensim is based on the reverse engineering of the Second life server software and is compatible with the SL viewer programs that display the world on your computer.
In Opensim you can build, script and walk around in your own virtual world. Opensim is used by many different worlds online and it is usually free to log in and travel around. My island is on Osgrid.
We use Opensim as a development system to test and develop products for Second life.
We also have ready-made islands that you can download and experiment with.
My contribution to Open Source.
We run a mix of Windows and Linux servers and workstations. The development servers and some workstations run OpenSUSE Linux 64bit. Linux is especially good for web, database servers, DHCP and router software.
Today more and more programs for development for Linux and the entire systems for Android, Mono and database development are available as open source.
We also run Windows XP virtualized under Linux with Virtualbox for the Realm crafter MMO server (Massive multiplayer online game) for which we have a development system.
Many game systems use MySql databases and OpenSUSE installs a complete Lamp system with MySql ready to use.
Running an Opensim island on a Linux computer that does not need to be the latest model works perfectly today.
Linux is today a stable system that runs excellent to use for both server and workstations.
